One of the biggest things in photography is composition. As a photographer, pro, or a nonpro, you choose what your audience is going to see. Besides the subject, camera, and camera settings, you need to select the right lens. Only then, your photography will be as you want it to be, and you will point out what you really want to show. And after the lens, you need to find a way for your viewers to see what you are trying to portray.
To get unique photos without using Photoshop, the composition is the final key.
Here, we will give you a couple of tips related to composition to improve your skills and achieve tremendous results.
You all know the saying “less is more.” It’s exactly like that in photography too. If you want to attract attention and show something, you should not have too much going on within a frame. If there are too many things, an average viewer won’t be able to focus at all. And this is where you lost your audience and your photography lost point.
This is the rule, especially for portrait photography, where you want to point out your subject and not everything around them.
Something that beginner photographers usually start with is the rule of the thirds. If you have a camera with a grid view, you will be able to see what we are talking about.
Once you select grid view, you will see that your view is divided into nine sections by two vertical and two horizontal lines. Now, if you focus on vertical lines, pay attention to thirds. If you place your subject (especially while making portrait photography) in any of these thirds, your photo will be much more straightforward.
If you now focus on horizontal lines, placing your subject to first or last third will give you a much more exciting image than if you put it in the center.
Another significant rule is to fill the frame. Yes, we did say earlier that the scene should be simplified, but it doesn’t mean leaving it empty. If you have a subject in the photo, but you are too far away, and your subject is smaller than the background, you will have a pointless picture instead of getting the effect of clarity. To avoid it, make sure to come closer to your subject and fill the frame.
Think of kids walking on the street with marked lines or dots. They love to step precisely on these shapes, right? It’s because repetition of the shape is grabbing their attention. The same thing stands for photography. If something is repeated more than twice, it’s catching the viewer’s eye and taking his attention. To give your photo a more substantial point, do not be afraid to repeat colors, shapes, or even subjects.
If you want to point out something, you can use some bold, bright colors. Set your composition in black and white, for example, and then point out your subject by making it pop out. This way, you will send a strong message, “look at me,” and your viewer will focus precisely on what you wanted him to focus on.
Now you have a couple of composition rules that can help you while shooting your shots. Remember, no matter how good you are, there’s always a place for improvement.
