Useful Travel Photography Tips

Since we are at the beginning of summer vacations and the traveling season, we decided to give you a couple of tips to improve your travel photography skills. Whether you’re a pro photographer or just want to make some thrilling shots for your Instagram, you can use these tips to improve the result.

Instead of souvenirs, you can bring home some fantastic shots that will always remind you of what you’ve seen. Also, these photos you can show to others and actually put them in your shoes. Why would you just talk if you can show? After all, the picture is worth a thousand words, right?

So, let’s see what you can use to improve your travel photography skills and bring home some wonderful memories with you.

  1. Wake up early, stay out late

This is the main rule for any trip. Wake up early, catch that incredible sunrise! Show everyone how it looks to see a sun going out above the sea or from a mountain. Also, stay out late so you can catch some night momentums and use the light and other tricks for your photos.

Waking up early and staying at night gives you the advantage of being (almost) alone wherever you are. This means more natural and fewer human interferences.

  1. Photograph local people if possible

If you visit an exotic destination known by its local residents, unique way of dressing, and similar, ask for their permission to take a shot. It can only help you practice portrait photography, and it can bring the place you visited life. Instead of explaining how these people look and behave, use your camera to capture it. Remember, when in a new country, try to talk to these people before just taking a shot. Not just that it’s more polite, but it’s also improving the way your subject behaves in the photo itself.

  1. Pack a lightweight tripod

Yes, I know that bringing the whole photography equipment with you is impossible, especially if you travel by plane. However, there are lightweight tripods specially designed for touring. So, pack one of these and carry it with you wherever you go. You never know when an incredible opportunity will arise, and having a tripod might be the key element for your photo to look as you wish.

  1. Make a photography plan

If you plan to travel and don’t have time to photograph, you will have the exact same photos as everyone else. Tourist photos, lots of sunsets and sunrises, but nothing someone else didn’t already capture. That’s why having a plan, for example, one or two hours per day especially taken out for photography can improve your result significantly. Knowing that you’re doing exactly what you planned to do will give you more focus to notice your surroundings and make that perfect shot.

  1. Patience is everything

Yes, you might come to a place and see what you already saw in someone else’s pictures. Then, you might wonder what to photograph and why you are even there. You know, nothing good comes up fast. Take your time, explore the surroundings, plan everything. Look online for places that not a lot of people mention in their posts. As we already mentioned, take your time, and observe. If you look at the clouds and they look too ordinary, in 15 minutes everything can change. Just be patient and give it time.

Now you have a couple of tricks to help you out. Use them wisely and enjoy your vacation!
